The first Healthy Schools Summit took place at the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center in Washington, D.C. on October 7 and 8, 2002—and launched the national Action for Healthy Kids initiative. This groundbreaking event brought together the nation's leading education, children's health and nutrition organizations to address the epidemic of overweight and obesity resulting from children's increasingly poor nutrition and sedentary lifestyles. These leading professionals worked together to develop solutions for local schools and communities nationwide. First Lady Laura Bush served as Honorary Chair of the 2002 Healthy Schools Summit, and the event was chaired and presided over by Dr. David Satcher, former U.S. Surgeon General and author of The Surgeon General's Call to Action to Prevent and Decrease Overweight and Obesity.
